New Designers 2012 celebrates 27 years as the foremost graduate design show, presenting the very best graduate designers from the class of 2012 with some 3500 exhibitors from 200 of the UK’s design courses.

On Wednesday 4 July the prestigious New Designers Awards were presented by the designer Jay Osgerby of the BarberOsgerby  practice, which designed the Olympic torch. These 16 awards, supported by leading brands and organisations from across the creative industries, herald the arrival of especially talented designers and anticipate the start of successful careers.

Officially opening New Designers Part 2, Jay Osgerby addressed the audience of guests from the design industry and the graduates saying ‘Creativity is at the forefront of the economy and a statement of the UK’s identity. New Designers is the best place to launch your careers. I have three bits of advice: Firstly be curious; Secondly be really resilient; Thirdly aim high, be ambitious and believe in your ability.’

THE NEW DESIGNERS IDA GENSLER AWARD

Winner: Laura Kettle, De Montfort University, BA Hons (First) Interior Design

Title of project: Cinema R.

Judges citation:  The strength of a single concept showed innovation and inspiration, harnessing forward thinking technology. The design shows exceptional creativity and initiative. An ideal graduate.

Winner’s comment:  I had divine inspiration in the shower for my project: what if a cinema was changeable like a magazine? I love movies and wanted to make the cinema going experience enjoyable and exciting again. Now I can’t wait to be working with a forward thinking company involved in exciting cutting edge design. And it’s brilliant that my university also won the Best Stand award.

The Judges for the IDA Gensler Award were:
Matt Jackson of Gensler
Charles Leon of CLA and IDA Chairman
Caroline Cundall of GA Design
Tony Booth of Design Coalition
Ken Mackay of Mackay + Partners

We are also delighted to announce that the award from IDA partner BCFA was awarded to Hugh Leader-Williams

THE NEW DESIGNERS BCFA LUGO AWARD

Winner:  Hugh Leader-Williams, Loughborough University,  BA Hons,  3D Design New Practice

Title of project: Spun Furniture.

Judges citation:  A simple concept that is well resolved, commercially viable and an original design.

Winner’s comment: My grand-dad was a keen woodworker who had his own lathe and we used to work together. I have always enjoyed making things and like the hands on process. There is something very satisfying about the tangible nature of having something you have designed and built yourself. The most valuable aspect of winning this award is working in the industry and seeing how it operates before branching out on my own.

The Judges for the BCFA Lugo Award were:
Lee Marvin of Lugo
Mark Gabbertas of Gabbertas
Carolyn Mitchell of Walker Greenbank
Colin Watson of BCFA
Barry Jenkins of Broome Jenkins
