The IDA provided a programme of 6 seminars  for 100% Design which proved to be very popular. Targetted at a wide audience to include, interior designers , manufacturers, product designers, specifiers. architects, students and educators the programme covered a range of topics pertinent to the contract/ commercial interiors industry.

The opening seminar was provided by Steve Baker (Right) who is the MP for Wycombe and a member of The All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group. The seminar "Where do you think your next business will come from?" provided Steve with a platform to address how he sees companies in the design and furnishing sector building a successful business and what can the government do to support this?

David Kierle and Zaniz Jakubowsku (Left) led a discussion "Interior Design Industry And Its Relationship With Architecture" . Exploring the definition, value and status of the interior designer and the clients' perception and interpretation of the industry as a serious profession. David and Zaniz provided an amicable discussion where some sparks might have been expected. David commented that 'The Interior Designer provides the soul for the building'. They both agreed that it was important to bring all parties together very early in any new project and Zaniz commented further that the UK lagged behind the US where it was more usual to have this at the very first meeting with the client.

Zaniz Jakubowski is the Principle of Zaniz and a council member of the IDA,  She was cited in the US press as 'the interior designer of the 90s' and David Kierle is Chairman of KSS Architects.

Barry Jenkins seminar was a discussion on "Future Architecture And Interior Trends In Commercial Areas". He explained how the commercial office continues to change and took a 5-10 year outlook of future trends and products. This session was extremely useful for manufacturers and designers to determine what the products of the future may be like.

Colin Watson led a lively discussion for the seminar "The Reality of Design Education" (pictured right). This seminar led on from discussions around education that resulted from the IDA and BCFA led seminar at New Designers earlier this year. Centred around the idea that great interior design needs great products and they both need highly skilled professionals to deliver. The seminar raised the issue; do the views of Manufacturers, Interior Designers, Product Designers and Educators coincide or are they poles apart? On the podium for this seminar were:

  • Colin Watson, the Managing Director of The IDA

  • Zaniz Jakubowski, the Principle of Zaniz Design

  • Lynn Jones, Course Leader at The National School of Furniture

  • Kaye Newman, Course Leader at London Metropolitan University
